Q:Hi M, sorry to bother you :( But I'm a little bit confused... What does DC 2008 mean? Is it December 2008? What happened? What black ocean???

Anonymous

DC 2008 refer to Dream Concert 2008, with the famous Black Ocean incident directed to SNSD. I think a longtime SONE like oniontaker would be better in answering the details, but I will tell you what I know.

It was an incident that happened during Dream Concert 2008 when members of other fanclubs (unfortunately includes Cassiopeia and Elf, which was quite ironic because SNSD was from the same company as TVXQ and SuJu) turned off their lightsticks when SNSD was on stage. In kpop, where lightsticks was turned on during a performance to show support for the groups, this action was supposedly a sign of hatred toward the girls, reportedly some fans even turned their backs from the stage.

Not sure what exactly who came up with the idea or the motivations, but jealousy probably tops the list considering the girls were working with boybands for commercials (example, Haptic with TVXQ).

Funnily enough, at the time, I am sure many SNSD antis were so proud of themselves for creating such event, I bet they are satisfied for being able to organize such a thing and show SNSD how much they are hated… But seeing where SNSD is standing right now, with their commercial success in Korea and abroad, it looks like the girls had the last laugh after all.

The Black Ocean, for me, is something that makes me respect SNSD as a group and as individuals. They completed their performance even though I am sure it wasn’t easy. Instead of giving up and breaking up like many antis would like, they continued pushing and got where they are right now.

It also shows just how great SONEs is in their support. They don’t care if others hate the girls, they support the girls and that’s where they focus their energy on. They don’t organize black oceans for other fandoms in retaliation now that SNSD is big.

It also, in a sense, shows just how committed SM is to their groups. I mean, SM could have easily placate these fangirls and make SNSD disappear, but they pushed through, and now everyone is reaping the result, including the girls.

Antis might see black ocean as a victory against SNSD, I see it as a catalyst for their success… It proves that hates rarely accomplish anything and has a way to bite you in the tush, LOL
